  11.                Apple LaserWriter Printer Tips

  14.                This document contains some information and tips for achieving the best results
  15.                with your printer.When using the LaserWriter 8 driver, you should be aware of
  16.                the following situations. Some happen with all LaserWriter printers, and others
  17.                happen only with specific models.
  18.  
  19.                All LaserWriter Printers
  20.  
  21.                * Some printers support both US Letter and US Letter Small paper sizes. To
  22.                prevent text from clipping or wrapping to the next line on different printers, use
  23.                US Letter Small. To get the widest possible margins from your printer model,
  24.                use US Letter.
  25.  
  26.                * Some printers with small amounts of memory will not print documents
  27.                containing large numbers of fonts. If a document using multiple fonts doesn't
  28.                print using the LaserWriter 8 driver, try selecting Unlimited Downloadable
  29.                Fonts in the Page Setup PostScript Options dialog box and print again.
  30.                Alternatively, try power-cycling the printer and printing the document again.

  32.                * If you encounter a timeout (PostScript error -8993) when printing multiple
  33.                copies of large and complex documents in the background, print the documents
  34.                one at a time or select foreground printing to avoid this problem.

  36.                Apple LaserWriter 12/640 PS Printer

  52.                Printer Memory Requirements
  53.  
  54.                The printer comes with 4 megabytes (MB) of memory. If you will be using
  55.                PhotoGrade or the optional duplex printing unit, you will need to add memory.
  56.                The printer uses SIMMs that can be purchased from many electronics and
  57.                computer outlets. See "RAM upgrade specifications" in Appendix D of your
  58.                user's manual for more information.
  59.  
  60.                Total memory requirements for the possible configurations that require
  61.                additional memory are:
  62.                * PhotoGrade - 12 MB
  63.                * Duplex Printing Unit - 12 MB
  64.                * PhotoGrade and Duplex Printing Unit for all paper sizes except legal - 20 MB
  65.                * PhotoGrade and Duplex Printing Unit for all paper sizes - 24 MB
  66.  
  67.                Using PhotoGrade and the Duplex Printing Unit
  68.  
  69.                If your printer has at least 12 MB of memory but less than 24 MB, you cannot
  70.                always use PhotoGrade and the duplex printing unit at the same time (see
  71.                "Printer Memory Requirements" above). If you select two-sided printing with
  72.                PhotoGrade, and PhotoGrade cannot be used at the same time, two-sided
  73.                printing will override PhotoGrade.

  75.                About the Duplex Printing Unit and the Multipurpose Tray
  76.  
  77.                The LaserWriter 12/640 PS does not allow the multipurpose tray to be used with
  78.                the duplex printing unit. The printer driver user interface provides a user
  79.                interface switch that allows you to switch between the multipurpose tray and
  80.                two-sided printing. If you have the multipurpose tray selected, two-sided
  81.                printing is disabled. If you want to use two-sided printing, select a tray other
  82.                than the multipurpose tray, then make your two-sided printing selection.
  83.                Similarly, if you have two-sided printing selected, you must deselect it before
  84.                the user interface allows you to select the multipurpose tray.

  86.                About Paper Jams and the Multipurpose Tray
  87.  
  88.                If you are printing from the multipurpose tray and your printer jams, check that
  89.                you are specifying the correct paper size in your page setup. The printer may
  90.                jam if you select the multipurpose tray and have the wrong size paper in the
  91.                multipurpose tray for the job that you are printing.
  92.  
  93.                Using the Envelope Feeder
  94.  
  95.                By default, the multipurpose tray takes priority over the envelope feeder.
  96.                However, if the multipurpose tray is set to the same paper size as the envelope
  97.                feeder, the printer will pull the paper from the multipurpose tray instead of the
  98.                envelope feeder.
  99.  
  100.                Use one of these methods to have the printer use the envelope feeder as the
  101.                paper source:
  102.                * Pick the envelope tray as the paper source in the Print dialog. The envelope
  103.                tray is identified as "Envelope Feeder/"
  104.                * Set the multipurpose tray to a size other than the desired envelope size using
  105.                the Apple Printer Utility.
  106.                * Make "Cassette (Optional)" Installed and Preferred by clicking on the printer's
  107.                icon and then selecting Change Setup from the Printing menu.

  109.                Using RARP with Subnet Mask and Default Gateway
  110.  
  111.                This note is applicable if you will be printing from a UNIX computer using
  112.                TCP/IP.
  113.  
  114.                When the printer uses RARP to determine its IP address, it ignores any defined
  115.                values for the subnet mask and default gateway.
  116.  
  117.                You cannot use RARP for regular IP address configuration. RARP can be used
  118.                once when the printer is initially configured, to set an IP address long enough to
  119.                connect to the printer via telnet. Then, with telnet set the IP address, subnet
  120.                mask, and default gateway.
  121.  
  122.                Apple Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS Printer
  123.  
  124.                This section provides additional information on using the Color LaserWriter
  125.                12/600 PS Printer.
  126.  
  127.                About the Demonstration Page
  128.  
  129.                When the power is turned on, the Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS automatically
  130.                prints a startup page and a demonstration page. For legal and B5 paper sizes,
  131.                only the startup page prints; the demonstration page is not printed. You can use
  132.                the Apple Printer Utility to turn off the printing of the startup and demonstration
  133.                pages.

  135.                About the Apple Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS Status Panel
  136.  
  137.                As described in the Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS manual, Appendix G, the
  138.                status panel lights aid in indicating hardware service problems found during
  139.                printer startup. If the Alert light is flashing and all the door lights are flashing,
  140.                check all the printer doors; one of them is open. If the Paper Out and Paper Jam
  141.                lights are blinking alternately, a hardware problem has been detected. To
  142.                identify the problem, notice which toner lights (C, M, Y, Bk) and how many of
  143.                the maintenance lights (in the area on the right-hand side of the status panel) are
  144.                on, and refer to the table below. Each area listed under "Problem" represents a
  145.                general circuit area for the service technician to investigate, not necessarily the
  146.                exact cause of the problem.

  148.                If you have an external SCSI hard disk drive attached but don't turn it on before
  149.                you turn on the printer's power, the printer may indicate a hardware failure. To
  150.                correct the problem, turn the hard disk drive on and restart the printer.
  151.  
  152.                Obtaining the Best Results for Business Graphics
  153.  
  154.                To obtain the best results for business graphics, colors should be 100%
  155.                saturated. For example, to print pure yellow, define yellow as 100% red and
  156.                100% green without any blue. Then print your document, selecting the
  157.                Color/Grayscale option in the Print Options dialog.
  158.  
  159.                Printing on Legal-Size Paper
  160.  
  161.                In the standard memory configuration, the Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS uses a
  162.                higher compression technique for legal-size paper using only the cyan, magenta,
  163.                and yellow colors. As a result of this compression technique, very complex
  164.                pages may show missing pixels in fine lines or small text, "jaggies" (edges with
  165.                low-resolution appearance), and color changes. To improve the image quality of
  166.                such pages, you can increase the printer's memory to 16 MB or more. With at
  167.                least 16 MB of printer memory, the Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS can achieve
  168.                the same quality with legal-size pages as with letter and A4 sizes using all four
  169.                colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black.)
  170.  
  171.                Printing Images on the Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS Printer
  172.  
  173.                The Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS Printer's highest resolution for printing
  174.                images is 150 x 150 dpi. No gain in image quality is achieved if higher
  175.                resolution images are used. All other types of documents print at 600 x 600 dpi.
  176.  
  177.                Avoiding Hue Shifts When Printing to File
  178.  
  179.                When you save an image in an Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) file all the
  180.                PostScript settings relating to the original output device in effect are saved along
  181.                with the image data. When the image is printed later, the settings that were in
  182.                effect may cause major hue shifts. To prevent these hue shifts save the image in
  183.                TIFF format instead of EPS.
  184.  
  185.                The Density Control Panel
  186.  
  187.                The Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS has been adjusted at the factory to produce the
  188.                best possible image quality. However, small variations exist among different
  189.                printers. To make subtle changes to image quality, you can use the Density
  190.                Control Panel on the back of the printer. NOTE: If changing the settings
  191.                produces inferior image quality, return to the factory settings by following these
  192.                steps: Select each color using the Color Select button, then press the - or +
  193.                button to move the indicator light to the center position. When the indicator is in
  194.                the center, press Enter to make the setting permanent. Repeat this procedure for
  195.                all four colors.
  196.  
  197.                Setting Your ColorSync System Profile for Best Printing Results
  198.  
  199.                Before using ColorSync color matching to print to the Color LaserWriter 12/600
  200.                PS printer, set the ColorSync System Profile for the monitor connected to your
  201.                system. To do this, open Control Panels in the System Folder and double-click
  202.                ColorSync System Profile. Make sure the following settings are selected:
  203.                * Set the profile for the monitor connected to your system. For the best color
  204.                match when printing, select the "page-white" or "D50" system profile for your
  205.                type of monitor if one is available.
  206.                * For the best visual match between the colors on your monitor and printed
  207.                colors, select the Page-White Gamma option in the Monitors control panel. To
  208.                select a gamma option, open the Monitors control panel, then hold down the
  209.                Option key while you click the Options button. In the Options window, click the
  210.                Use Special Gamma checkbox to put an X in it. Then choose Page-White
  211.                Gamma from the list.
  212.  
  213.                * On a multiscan monitor, make sure that the color temperature, or intensity, is
  214.                set to 9300K (the default setting). See the monitor manual for instructions. If the
  215.                Page-White Gamma option is selected with a color temperature other than
  216.                9300K, your monitor colors could look too red or too blue compared to printed
  217.                colors.

  238.                If Tray Switching is turned on and you have an optional 500-sheet feeder that
  239.                contains the same size paper as the 250-sheet feeder, use the 500-sheet feeder as
  240.                the preferred paper source for optimal printing performance. See the manual that
  241.                came with your printer for instructions on selecting the 500-sheet feeder as the
  242.                preferred paper source.
  243.  
  244.                LaserWriter Pro 810
  245.  
  246.                * With some graphics programs, bitmapped graphics printed with the Precision
  247.                Bitmap Alignment option in the Page Setup PostScript Options dialog box will
  248.                be reduced in size by 25%.
  249.  
  250.                LaserWriter Pro 600 and 630
  251.  
  252.                * When you print envelopes from the optional envelope feeder, you cannot use
  253.                Auto Select as the Paper Source (in the Print dialog box).
  254.  
  255.                * When you print at a resolution of 600 dots per inch (dpi), bitmapped images
  256.                may appear with lines across the image. When bitmapped images are printed at
  257.                300 dpi, lines across the image do not appear.
  258.  
  259.                LaserWriter II NT and II NTX
  260.  
  261.                * If you select both the Smooth Graphics and the Invert Image options in the
  262.                Page Setup PostScript Options dialog box, a PostScript error results.
  263.  
  264.                * Do not use the B5 tray to print envelopes on a LaserWriter II NT. Use the
  265.                letter tray instead.
  266.  
  267.                LaserWriter IIg and IIf
  268.  
  269.                * When you select paper sources from the First Page From and Remaining
  270.                From pop-up menus in the Print dialog box, selecting Manual Feed for either
  271.                source sets the driver to print the first page from the manual feed tray.

  273.                * The US Legal paper size has been changed on some LaserWriter IIf/IIg
  274.                printers to be more compatible with other Apple LaserWriter printers. To
  275.                prevent text from clipping or wrapping to the next line on different printers, use

  277.                use US Legal.

  279.                * Some form-printing application programs cannot print forms using the Layout
  280.                settings in the Layout dialog box.
